What does it take to be successful? Gulf Coast Business Credit (GCBC)’s "Simple Success Solutions" is a series which examines entrepreneurial and startup success stories. This week’s tip is to hire the right people!

How did Starbucks get to be so successful? Our last tip was to create a mission statement, and Starbucks definitely did. Then they moved on to our next Simple Success Solution: they hired the right person.

Rewind back to 1971 when Starbucks first began: Starbucks was a mere coffee-roasting shop in Seattle. The store did not become the coffee shop we know today until they hired Howard Schultz in 1982.

Schultz was very driven and with a little inspiration from Italian espresso bars he convinced the board of directors to allow him to start the first Starbucks coffee shop in 1985. In a matter of two years, Schultz had already opened 17 locations. Schultz discovered very quickly that the demand for specialty coffee was rising and in just ten years Starbucks had 677 locations.

Now, Starbucks is the largest coffee shop in the world with over 20,519 locations. In some cases a business can only be as successful as their employees make it, this was certainly the case for Starbucks in hiring Schultz.
